Students in this course will be learning and working alongside students and professionals from New Horizon Academy toward their nationally-transferable Child Development Associate credential, a key stepping stone on the path of career development in Early Childhood Education. Students will gain knowledge on nurturing the emotional, physical, intellectual, and social development of children. This course will include both classroom sessions at CTECH as well as on-site learning and practice with New Horizon Academy. This course meets for two class periods for one semester at CTECH Honors Prerequisite: Child & Human Development

As a community project-based class, Experience Leadership will align closely with all aspects of the graduate profile. Students will develop a much deeper understanding of their own strengths and opportunities to ethically contribute to the community. They will be required to think critically about community needs and the impact their work can have, as well as communicate in a wide variety of ways as they develop and implement their projects. Collaboration will be essential: the classroom community will be the foundation for all of the work undertaken by students and the primary support when setbacks inevitably occur. Beyond the impact that students will make through their work in the community, the overall goal of the class will be to prepare students to positively contribute to society in the future. Four pillars of the class. 1. Classroom community 2. Personal leadership style assessment, reflection and growth 3. Book study to ground the class in a particular view of leadership 4. Students will participate in both classroom and online learning as well as skills testing. Classroom and online learning will be facilitated by a Medical Careers licensed, RPS Instructor. This course serves as an entry level course and pathway to additional training for EMT/Paramedic Careers and a crossover course for both Health Science Careers and Firefighter. This course meets for two class periods for one semester at CTECH. Prerequisite: Firefighter Mentorship OR Intro to Health Science Careers OR Anatomy and Physiology Subject::HSC

Firefighter Mentorship: Rochester Public Schools is partnering with Riverland Community College to explore this field. Students will complete book work in study hall or at home via an online portal that comes with the textbook. Skills training occurs on five weekend days for 8 hours each and includes training on hoses, foam, search and rescue, ladders, extinguishers, and a live burn. This is a college course so students should expect independent self-pace work. Firefighter I is scheduled to run during Fall Semester and Firefighter II during Spring Semester. After completing this work, students will be eligible to take the MN Fire Services Certification Board Exam once they turn 18. If you register for this course, the gifted specialist in your school will provide the materials. All mentorships will be handled on an individual basis and are coordinated from inception to completion by the Gifted Services Department. The student must exhibit maturity, responsibility, and the willingness to commit to the expectations of the mentor and the Gifted Services Department. This course will offer an overview of the wide variety of career opportunities in the many fields of criminal justice. Student will learn about the law enforcement, judicial, and corrections components of the US criminal justice system, with emphasis on the activities and lawful parameters of the work of peace officers. Topics will include history of law enforcement, community policing, patrol and traffic, investigations, search and arrest, drug enforcement, gangs, corrections, and juvenile justice. Guest experts will provide much of the instruction, representing many community agencies including Olmsted County Sheriff's Office, Rochester Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and Olmsted county's attorney's office, corrections, parole, and detention. In addition, students will engage in practical field activities outside the classroom. In addition, students will engage in practical field activities outside the classroom. The class will meet for a blocked period at CTECH 4 days per week (Tu-Fr) plus a flex day for independent work and assessments. This course qualifies for Articulated Credit. Prerequisite: None

Students in this course will explore the culture of teaching, the role of a teacher, student learning, multicultural/diverse students, and the influence society has on education and on learning. This course includes 30 hours of community service, most of which will be completed during class time. This course will be taught in a two-period block format, so plan your schedule accordingly. This course meets for two class periods for one semester @ CTECH Concurrent Enrollment Students are eligible for the service learning experience transcript certification. College credit from University of Minnesota (2 credits per semester) are awarded. Prerequisite: None

Students in this course will explore diversity in schools, strategies for increasing cultural competency, parent and community involvement in schools and professional development for educators. Students reflect on themselves as futures teachers. This course includes 30 hours of community service, most of which will be completed during class time.
